Cahokia Mounds, IL

These are the stairs to the grand plaza, where the leader of the Mississipians lived.  It is 100 feet high and huge.  The millions of baskets of dirt used  to build it was carried on the backs of the tribesmen.
As we walked through the sacred grounds we saw a doe and her fawn.
This is one of the sacred mounds built between 900-1200 by the Mississippians.  They contain the oldest remains north of Mexico.  David and Jim grew up here and they never heard of them before!
This is a prehistoric sundial made from tree trunks.
